BA Dreamin’ - 2019 Holiday Edition

Updated: Jul 4, 2022

Every year, I look forward to seeing the holiday spots that come out, might I say even more so than the Super Bowl?! They are funny, heartwarming and feel good! I recently read somewhere that more and more brands are moving away from spending money on traditional holiday ads; instead focusing on creating more evergreen work. Let’s enjoy them while we have them! Here are my top picks for 2019:

THE HILARIOUS ONE

AVIATION GIN - "THE GIFT THAT DOESN’T GIVE BACK"

What Ryan Reynolds and his team were able to pull off in such a short amount of time was incredibly impressive. I watched an interview with him where he said he found the actress, shot and edited the spot in 72 hours - WOW. This spot is down right hilarious and what a stroke of brilliance, taking a big cultural moment and making it his. It’s simple and so effective without ever mentioning Peloton - genius!

THE FEEL GOOD SPOT

XFITNITY - “A HOLIDAY REUNION”

After 37 years E.T. was reunited with Elliott along with his family in this heartwarming spot. It’s nostalgic, well told, and introduces E.T. to a new generation. Kudos to those who managed all of the clearances that had to take place to get this made, and for getting the original actor, Henry Thomas, on board!

THE CUTE ONE

AMAZON - "HOLIDAY 2019"

What’s gift giving without Amazon? I personally don’t know what I would do without Amazon and prime delivery. This spot is super cute with the singing boxes, dancing kids and adults!

THE CELEBRITY SPOT

WALKER’S CRISPS - "CHRISTMAS 2019"

It’s virtually impossible not to make it through the holiday season without hearing Mariah Carey’s, “All I Want for Christmas is You.” To get the 'Queen of Christmas' in this ad for British chip brand Walkers signing that tune is truly epic. The spot is well done and funny!

Love it or hate it, you can't deny the song's (and Carey's) accomplishment this year as it hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time, making it both the song that took the longest to do so, and the first Christmas track to take the top spot since “The Chipmunk Song” 60 years ago!

That’s all for now - looking forward to what 2020 has to bring! Happy New Year!
